Vertical Garden

이 목조 주택은 일본 오사카(Osaka)의 한 조용한 주거지구에 위치한다. 건축주는 많은 친구들이 모여 즐겁게 쉴 수 있는 집을 원했다. 일상 생활의 측면에서, 가족이 언제든지 만나 얘기하는 것 또한 중요했다. 이 프로젝트의 큰 문제는 허용된 공간이 다섯 가족이 살기에 너무 작다는 점이었다. 그리하여 건축가는 실내 격벽을 가능한 한 떼어내 하나의 연속된 공간을 만들고자 하였다. 주변으로부터 프라이버시를 유지하면서도 내부와 외부를 개방적으로 연결하는 방법을 찾기가 어려웠다.
건축가는 정원을 출입구와 식당으로 연결되는 좁은 골목길처럼 배치하고, 격자 울타리와 커다란 지붕으로 정원을 둘러쌌다. 격자 울타리에는 많은 천연 석재와 다양한 종류의 식물을 배치함으로써, 시간이 갈수록 자연스러운 철망 울타리(수직정원)가 되도록 했다. 이렇게 내부의 정원은 외부와 내부의 경계를 흐리면서 외부 공간이 된다. 이 주택은 식물과 천연 석재가 함께 자라나며 유기적으로 변해갈 것이다.

This wooden house stands in a quiet residential district in Osaka, Japan. The client wanted a house where many friends gather and can relax with pleasure. About the everyday living, it was also important that family meets and talks each other anytime. The big problem of this project was the permission space was considerably too small for five families. Then, we tried to take off division wall inside as much as possible and let it be one continuous space. It was difficult to find out the method of connecting an inside and the exterior openly, keeping privacy from the neighborhood.
We place the garden like a thin alley connected to the entrance and the dining room, and enclosed the garden with mesh fence and a large roof. In a mesh fence, We attached lots of natural stones and various kinds of plants so as to become organic mesh fence (vertical garden) as time passes.
This inner garden has become an external space that blurs the boundary between exterior and interior. We are sure that this house will keep growing while changing organically with plants and natural stone.

About material ‘stone’ Interview with Shunsuke Koseki + Itsuki Takamatsu
How did the materiality, feeling and details of stone affect the project in terms of concept, the intention of architect and its presentation?
We think the stone which is our close is the sustainable natural material.
We tried the design of the new louver matched with the landscape of the city using natural stones and plants.
In this project, the fresh impression created by mixing something to contrast is made important, for example solid stones and soft plants or something organic and something artificial or the one which changes and the one which doesn’t change etc.
The contrast of plants and stones brings out the concept in this project. Comfortable breeze and gentle light go through from the gap of this organic louver, even if it’s seen from both of the interior and outside.
About what should we be careful when designing and undertaking construction with stone?
Processing and carriage take time and effort because the stone is heavy and hard. Without checking an actual sample of a stone, it’s difficult to judge. The stone is rather expensive compared with the other material.
Do you think there is any limit on material expression?
The limit of the expression in use of the stone isn’t felt so much. But I have to be careful with balance of strong impression the stone has.
What material are you looking at now? And do you think what material will get much attention in the future?
I’m looking for the material which matches the environment. And I’m very interested in the material which changes or grows as time has passed. In Japan, the wood used from ancient times is getting attention once again while settling fire prevention and a problem of the weather resistance.
작품의 개념, 건축가의 의도, 주제 표현 등을 위해 석재의 물성, 느낌 또는 디테일이 작품에서 어떤 역할을 하는가? 우리 주변에 있는 석재가 지속 가능한 천연 재료라고 생각한다. 우리는 천연 석재와 식물을 활용하여 도시의 풍경과 어울리는 새로운 루버의 설계를 시도했다. 이 프로젝트에서는 무엇인가 대비적인 것을 혼합할 때 일어나는 신선한 느낌이 중요했는데, 예를 들어 단단한 석재와 부드러운 식물, 유기적인 것과 인공적인 것, 혹은 변하는 것과 변하지 않는 것 등의 대비를 생각해볼 수 있다. 식물과 석재의 대비에서 프로젝트의 개념을 가져왔다. 내부 또는 외부에서, 편안한 미풍과 부드러운 빛이 이 유기적인 루버의 간극을 통과하는 것을 볼 수 있다.
석재를 다루는 건축물의 설계, 시공 과정의 주안점은 무엇이라고 생각하는가? 돌은 무겁고 단단하기 때문에, 가공하고 운반하는 데에 시간과 노력이 든다. 실제 석재 샘플을 확인하지 않은 채 판단하기란 어렵다. 석재는 다른 재료에 비해 가격이 비싼 편이다.
재료 표현의 한계가 있다고 생각하는가? 돌을 사용하는 데 있어 표현의 한계는 그리 크게 느껴지지 않는다. 하지만 돌이 갖는 강한 인상의 균형을 맞추는 데 신경을 써야 한다.
현재 주목하고 있는 재료는 어떤 것이며, 앞으로 주목 받을 재료는 무엇이라 생각하나? 환경과 어울리는 재료를 찾고 있다. 그리고 시간이 지날수록 변화하거나 성장하는 재료에 매우 관심이 있다. 일본에서는 화재 방지와 내후성의 문제를 해결해야함에도 고대부터 사용되던 목재가 다시 한 번 관심을 얻고 있다.
