1908년에 완공된 링컨파크(Lincoln park) 동물원의 남쪽 연못은 당시 인근의 신축 아파트 주거단지와 떨어져 위치하며, 그림 같은 자연 풍경을 선사했다. 오늘날 이 연못의 수면에는 주변의 변화하는 도시 환경 이상의 것들이 비치고 있다. 이곳의 재설계는 자연과 생태와 공공공간의 개념들이 어떻게 변화해왔는가를 느끼게 한다. 건축가의 계획은 네이처 보드워크 프로젝트를 통해 하나의 총체적인 생태계를 도심에 구축하는 것이었다. 연못은 동물들이 스스로 자유롭게 짝을 짓고 먹이를 구하며 쉼터를 만드는 삶을 보여주는, 일종의 우리 없는 동물원으로 탈바꿈했다. 하지만 이 연못은 방문객들을 위한 시각적 볼거리 이상의 혜택도 제공한다. 새롭게 정의된 연못은 주변의 지형 및 풍경과 더불어, 정주하는 동물과 이주하는 동물 집단들을 연결하는 중요한 서식지가 될 뿐만 아니라 도시의 오래된 빗물처리시설에 대한 기능적이고 자립적인 해법도 제시한다. 사전에 제작한 프리패브 목조 늑재와 유리섬유 돔을 활용하여 연못의 개방형 파빌리온을 만들었는데, 지붕만 덮은 이 파빌리온은 인간과 자연 세계를 결합하는 광범위한 공적 용도로 활용된다. 기본적으로 야외 교실로 사용되는 이 파빌리온은 학생들에게 물과 생태학, 연못, 그리고 거기에 서식하는 종들에 대해 학습할 수 있는 체험의 장으로서, 변화하는 대지가 제공하는 공감각적인 경험들을 통해 생동감 있는 학습을 가능케 한다. 글: 스튜디오 갱 아키텍츠 When it was built in 1908, Lincoln Park Zoo’s South Pond offered a picturesque depiction of nature, steps away from the neighborhood’s new residential apartment buildings. Today, the pond’s water reflects more than its changing urban surroundings: its redesign gives insight into evolving conceptions of nature, ecology, and public space. Our plan for the Nature Boardwalk project was to construct an entire ecosystem in the midst of the city. The pond is transformed into a type of zoo without cages where animals voluntarily display themselves as they go about mating, foraging, and making shelter. But the pond offers benefits that extend beyond visual spectacle for human visitors. Together with its surrounding topography and landscape, the newly-defined pond creates both a crucial, connective habitat for resident and migratory animal populations, and a functional, self-sustaining solution to the city’s aging stormwater infrastructure. Prefabricated wood ribs and fiberglass domes are employed to create the pond’s open-air pavilion, which provides a covered platform for a range of public uses that bring together the human and natural worlds. Primarily used as an outdoor classroom, the pavilion gives schoolchildren an outpost for learning about water, ecology, the pond, and its inhabitants-content that’s brought to life through the immersive sensory experiences offered by the evolving site.
