스페인의 <천연가스회사 가스 나투랄(Gas Natural)의 신사옥>은 육중한 볼륨이라는 한 특성만으로 주변 도시 환경과 관계를 맺고, 도시의 스카이 라인상에 두각을 보이기 시작하며 현대 건축의 흐름에 합류했다. 물론 그렇다고 이 신축 건물이 주변 도시 환경, 즉 바르셀로네타(Barceloneta) 지구와 인근 주택 및 공원의 작은 스케일과 공존하려는 의식이 부족하다는 것을 의미하지 않는다. 이 건물은 오피스 타워의 수직성을 보이는 동시에, 안쪽에서는 건물의 대표적 특성을 잘 드러내는 출입구를 제공한다. 이러한 제안은 육중한 볼륨을 일련의 구조로 단편화했다가 결국 하나의 통합된 볼륨을 형성하는 방식에 대한 관심에서 기인한다. 이렇게 형성된 볼륨은 다양한 스케일에 응답하면서 인근 아파트 건물들과 분명한 관계를 맺고, 넓은 진입로를 형성하여 바르셀로네타 지구의 독특한 공적 공간이 활짝 열릴 수 있게 한다. 그리하여 건물은 다양한 차원의 도시 풍경을 형성하면서 땅과 연결된다. 입면은 비슷한 기준에 따라 처리했다. 일련의 커다란 창문들은 흥미로운 디테일을 만들어내는 데 반해, 중성적인 볼륨 처리는 건물을 햇빛과 소음으로 부터 보호하고 주변의 다른 건물들과 어우러지는 일련의 추상적인 입체들을 보여준다. 글: 엔리크 미라예스 The buildable volume, the singular character of this new building, its relationship with the urban periphery makes a member of the family of contemporary buildings which have started to appear on the skyline of the city. However this doesn’t mean the new building lacks a clear desire to become compatible with it urban surroundings; the small scale of the district of la Barceloneta, the surrounding houses and the park. It has the verticality of an office tower, while at the same time offers an entrance that shows the representative character of the building from a rapid view of the interior. That is why we have made a proposal where the interest lies in the fragmentation of the buildable volume into a series of constructions that at the end form a unified volume, which responds to different scales and in clear relation to the nearby apartment buildings, forming a great doorway which allows the opening up of the district of La Barceloneta and a singular public space that brings the construction to the ground, until it forms an urban landscape of different dimensions. The treatment of the facades follows a similar criteria. A series of large windows create interest close up, while an indifferent volumetric treatment protects the building from the sun and the noise and shows a series of abstract volumes that confuse with the other buildings along the periphery. Written by Miralles Tagliabue EMBT About material ‘glass’ Interview with Miralles Tagliabue EMBT 이 프로젝트에서 유리를 주재료로 사용한 이유는? 그렇다. 이유가 있다. 이 건물은 특별한 장소에 위치한 고층 사옥인 만큼, 유리가 채광에도 좋고 바르셀로나의 전경을 감상 하기에도 좋다. 또한 유리의 외관은 자연광과 건물 자체의 조명에 따라 매우 가변적이다. 때때로 이 건물은 하늘과 바다를 반사하면서 형체가 사라져 보이기도 한다. 유리와 함께 사용된 주재료는 무엇이며, 이들 재료 사이에는 어떤 상호작용이 있는가? 금속 재료, 그 중에서도 알루미늄을 주로 사용했다. 알루미늄은 유리와 비슷하게 빛을 반사하는 특성이 있다. 구조와 접합지 점, 천장 등에는 철(iron)을 사용했다. 목재는 건물의 외부와 실내 공공 영역에서만 정확하게 사용했다. 유리의 사용은 미적인 요소를 충족시키는 반면 강도, 단열성능 저하, 에너지 소비량 증대와 같은 취약점이 있다. 이러한 유리 의 미적인 요소와 기능적인 요소의 상충되는 특성에서 어떻게 디자인하였는가? 기술적으로 해결했다. 태양의 방향에 따라 유리를 겹겹이 중첩시켰고, 그 사이사이마다 공극을 두었다. 건축자재로써 유리의 쓰임이 어떻게 발전할 것으로 예상하는가? 앞으로 계획하는 유리를 통한 예술적인 표현방법이 있는가? 우리는 유리를 다양한 방식으로 사용한다. 사실 <가스 나투랄 신사옥>에는 지중해의 느낌을 내기 위해 물결 모양의 유리 가 창문으로 사용되었다. 베네치아(Venice)에서는 가공하지 않은 유리를 그대로 사용했다. 유리는 독특한 재료다. Is there any particular reason for using Glass as main material for this project? Yes, there is. It is a tall office building, placed in a privileged place, so that the glass provides good lighting and views over Barcelona. Also, its appearance is very changeable, as daylight and light the building itself. At times, the building tends to disappear with the reflection of the sky and the sea. What materials was mainly used with Glass in this project, and how do those materials interact with each other? Metal materials, mainly aluminum. Since aluminum has characteristics similar to the glass reflection light. We also used iron: for structures, joinery, ceilings, etc. Wood is punctually used outside of the building and in public areas of the interior. Using Glass can fulfill aesthetic needs, but also has functional disadvantages such as weak structural strength, low insulation performance, and high energy consumption. How have you resolved this contradiction between aesthetic and functional aspects in this design? It is technically solved. With several layers of glass treated according to solar orientation and a cavity between some of them. How do you think will the use of Glass develop as a building material? Do you have in mind any way of artistic expression with Glass that you want to use for your future projects? We use the glass in many ways. In fact, the windows of are wavy glass to create a Mediterranean hues. In Venice we used raw glass, untreated. Glass is a unique material.
