쿤스트훌 리버풀 ‘ 북부의 서펜타인(Serpentine) 파빌리온’이라고도 불리는 <쿤스트훌
리버풀 (리버풀 미술관)>은 리버풀에서 현대 미술의 새로운 중심지인‘ 그린란드
스트리트’를 위한 옥상 구조물이었다.
본래 옥상은 강의와 공연·행사를 위한 유희적이고 실험적인 공간이었다. 옛 공장과
합쳐지면서 기존의 계단과 옥상을 통합하고 건물의 공적인 입면 너머로 확장하는
것처럼 보인다.
설치물은 옥상을 두 개의 테라스 공간으로 나누는 파빌리온 구조로 이루어졌으며,
도시와 머지사이드(Merseyside) 쪽을 각각 향하는 두 옥상 공간에는 초목 울타리가
길게 배치되었다.
투과성이 있는 막 구조를 지나 이쪽에서 저쪽으로 걸어가는 방문객은 탄력적으로
뒤틀리는 커튼을 관통할 수 있게 되었다. 현대 공장 건물에 사용되는 염화비닐(PVC)
커튼으로 만든 반투명 표피는 두 겹의 층으로 이루어졌다. 흰색의 외피는 공간에
비바람이 들이치지 않게 보호하고, 붉은색 내피는 보온 및 방음 효과를 높인다.
<쿤스트훌>은 변화하는 빛과 바람이 커튼 속으로 스며들면서, 역동적이고 활기 넘치는
특성을 만들어 변화하는 환경에 응답했다.
반투명 외피는 이 예술센터를 도시와 연결하고, 머지(Mersey) 강과 리버풀이 보이는
환상적인 전망 속에서 대화하고 토론할 수 있는 공간을 제공한 것이다.
리버풀의 재생에서 영감을 받은 <쿤스트훌>은 옛 공장단지의 산업적 유산과 그 주변
건물들을 넌지시 반영했다. 리버풀은 세계문화유산으로 선정된 넓은 땅과 낡은 건물,
다양한 리노베이션과 개축 및 신축이 결합하여 건축적 풍경을 이루고 있다. 이런
혼합은 영감을 일으킨다. 이러한 성장이 분명하게 나타나며, 방문객이 건축 환경에
관한 더욱 폭넓은 논쟁에 참여하도록 하는 것이 <쿤스트훌>의 목적이었다.

(The Kunsthulle LPL), also called the serpentine pavilion
of the north, was a structure for Greenland Street, a
major new venue for contemporary art in Liverpool.
The rooftop structure was a playful and experimental
space for lectures, performances and events. It
appeared to merge into the old factory, incorporating an
existing staircase, the roof top, and extending out over
the public Facade of the building.
The installation consisted of a pavilion structure that
divides the rooftop into two terraced spaces - the City
and Merseyside - that were lined with green hedges.
A permeable membrane allowed visitors to walk from
one to another, passing through a curtain that flexes
and warps. Made from the PVC curtain used in modern
factory buildings, the translucent skin had two layers:
an outer white layer, which protected the space from
the weather; and an inner red layer, which added
thermal and noise protection.
responded to the shifting environment,
with changes in light and wind playing across the
curtains, creating a dynamic and lively character.
Its translucent skin acted as beacon that links the arts
centre to the city, offering a space for talks and
discussions with fantastic views to the River Mersey
and Liverpool.
Inspired by the regeneration of Liverpool, the
alluded to the industrial heritage of this former factory
complex and its surrounding buildings. Liverpool’s
architectural landscape combines a large-scale World
Heritage Site, decrepit buildings, and a variety of
renovations, refurbishments and new builds. It is an
inspiring mix. The feeling of growth is palpable and the
aimed to engage audiences in a wider
debate about the built environment.
