나토 SHAPE 기지 국제학교 캠퍼스
SHAPE ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL
2009년, 벨기에 몬스 지역에 있는 나토(NATO, 북대서양조약기구) 통합군수사령부(SHAPE) 기지의 국제학교 캠퍼스 조성 계획이 완성되었다. 기존의 낙후된 교육시설과 조악한 캠퍼스 배치계획은 물리적?기능적으로도 현대 교육 환경에 적합하지 않아, 미정부와 나토 국가들은 이를 개선하기 위해 최신 교육시설을 갖춘 캠퍼스 조성을 계획하였다. 기본 계획은 미국 초?중?고등학교를 포함하여 프랑스어를 중심으로 하는 벨기에 국제학교, 영국/캐나다 학교, 독일 학교 그리고 노르웨이, 터키, 이탈리아 폴란드의 방과 후 학교로 구성된다.
SHAPE 국제학교의 철학은 학생들에게 다양한 국가들의 문화와 관점을 서로 이해하고 배우게 함으로써 국제 공동체 의식을 강화하는데 있다. 전통적인 유럽 광장 배치방식과 토머스 제퍼슨이 계획한 버지니아 대학 캠퍼스 배치방식에서 영감을 얻어 미국 학교들을 북쪽과 남쪽에, 국제학교들을 서쪽과 동쪽에 배치하였다. 건물 배치와 함께 대지의 12m 양쪽 남북 끝의 고저차를 이용하여 4단계의 계단식 공용 광장을 만들어 냈다. 이 공용 광장은 학생들의 운동장, 체육 시설, 다목적 시설 등으로 구성하여 특정 국가에 상관없이 모두가 사용 가능하도록 접근성을 높여 학생들간의 서로 상호 교류가 활발해질 수 있게 고안되었다.
학교를 위한 건축 재료 선정은 조적기술이 매우 발달했던 벨기에의 건축술과 흐리고 비가 자주 내리는 독특한 환경을 고려하여, 밝지만 습기에 강한‘ 복숭아색’ 로마 벽돌로 하였으며 접착방법은 시멘트가 아닌 특수접착제 방식으로 현대기술을 도입해 시공하였다. 프랑스 문화 및 건축 양식의 영향을 받은 남부 벨기에의 지역적 특징을 기반으로 Attic/ Cornice/ Giant order를 주어진 교육 프로그램, 지역 시공 기술 및 재료들로 재해석하여 입면 설계에 도입하였다. 또한 다양한 인종과 문화를 상징하는 방식으로 6가지 색을 추출하여 수직 차양시설에 적용하였다.
전체 계획은 국제학교 운영에 차질이 없도록 신중하게 단계별 시공으로 나뉘었다. 2014년에 19,560m2 규모의 미국 초등학교/중학교가 완성되었으며, 12,240m2 규모의 고등학교가 2015년 가을에 완성되어 2단계의 공사가 마무리 되었다. 현재 국제학교의 일부가 시공될 예정이며, 벨기에 국제학교는 설계 중에 있다.

In 2009 the design team completed a master plan for the 21.5 acre SHAPE International School campus (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) near Mons, Belgium. The existing haphazard array of campus buildings were physically and functionally obsolescent and severely impeded the educational mission. The master plan calls for the replacement of all existing campus buildings with new, state-of-the-art facilities, including a new US Elementary, Middle School, and High School, and four new educational facilities for other NATO member nations.
In the designs of the master plan and schools, every effort was made to incorporate the international spirit of the school whose philosophy is centered on the notion of the school as a Global Community, where every opportunity should be used to acquaint students with persons of other nationalities, to study their cultures and understand their point of view. To that end, a large, open student Commons inspired by a traditional Belgian Town Square, unifies the U.S. schools anchoring the North and South ends, with the International School cluster on the East and West sides. The Commons, along with a shared play field, Gyms and Multi-Purpose Room, were designed to encourage shared use and interaction for all of the Schools.
Architecturally, the use of a peach-colored Roman brick acknowledges the regional use of the material and masonry construction while at the same time providing a sense of both lightness and brightness in a climate that predominantly overcast and rainy. Realization of the master plan is occurring in multiple phases, as the base and all of the schools have remained fully operational during construction. The fall 2015 opening of the 131,744ft2 High School, along with the completion of a 210,538ft2 Elementary and Middle School in 2014, marks the completion of the first two phases.
