<인성,리더십 개발센터(CCLD)>는 인성과 리더십의 개발을 사관생도의 모든 경험적 측면으로 통합한다는 공군사관학교의 사명을 지원하는 교육연구센터 역할을 하는 동시에, 전국적인 리더십 및 인성 개발 구상을 위한 두뇌집단 역할도 한다.
<인성,리더십 개발센터>는, SOM이 1954년에 설계하여 2004년에 국가역사기념지구(National Historic Landmark District)로 지정된 사관학교 캠퍼스에 증축되어 중요한 상징적 의미를 부가하는 건물이다. 1990년대 이후 생도구역 내에 지어진 첫 번째 건물로, <인성,리더십 개발센터>는 캠퍼스를 위한 건축적인 초점을 만들면서 사관학교의 상징적 건물인 생도 예배당과 대비를 이룬다.
미 공군사관학교장 미첼 존슨 중장은“ 인성과 리더십의 개발은 공군사관학교의 가장 중요한 사명이며, 사관학교 경험의 모든 측면과 엮여있다. 이 아이콘적인 구조물은 인성과 리더십의 통합적인 연구?개발에 유리한 장소를 조성하겠다는 우리의 담대한 비전을 표현한다.” 라고 언급한다.

이 프로젝트의 건축적인 테마가 무엇인가?
<인성,리더십 개발센터>는 캠퍼스에서 건축적인 초점을 만들며, 사관학교의 상징적인 생도 예배당과 대비를 이룬다. 46,000ft2 넓이의 건물은 미 공군사관학교에 눈에 띄는 아이콘을 만든다. <인성?리더십 개발센터>는 105ft 길이의 극적인 천창을 갖추고 있는데, 이런 디자인 요소가 캠퍼스 상에서 대담한 존재감을 확립한다.
먼 곳에서 보면 천창의 형상이 비행기 방향키 같다. 이는 특히 이 캠퍼스에서 상징적이고 두드러지는 양상을 띈다. 이런 형태를 의도한 것인가? 그렇지 않으면 왜 이 형태로 디자인 하였나?
우리는 건물을 시각적으로 북극성과 정확히 정렬시켜 설계했고, 이는 <인성?리더십 개발센터>와 공군사관학교의 핵심 가치들을 더욱 폭넓게 상징한다. 북극성에 초점을 두고 105ft 높이의 천창 구조를 설계함으로써, <인성?리더십 개발센터>의 사명을 구현하는 강력한 랜드마크를 만들어냈다. 북극성 밑에서 공동체와 협력을 위해 정렬되는 이 신축 센터의 디자인은 사관학교의 열망을 건축적으로 의미있게 해석한다.
1954년에 SOM이 이 캠퍼스의 전체를 구성했다고 들었다. 기존 맥락에 새로운 건물을 더했을 텐데, 새 것과 옛 것을 어떤 관계를 놓고 구성했는지 궁금하다. 또한 기존의 건물을 어떻게 참고했나?
1993년에 공군사관학교는 인성,리더십 개발센터라는 새로운 프로그램을 만들었다. 이 프로그램은 나중에 교내의 상징적 건물인 (신앙 기반의) 예배당과 대비를 이룰 이성(理性) 기반의 신축 건물에 수용하기로 결정되었다. 50년이 지난 시점에서 가장 중요한 프로젝트 중 하나를 재해석할 기회를 갖게 된 우리는, 예배당과 어울리면서도 사관학교의 격자체계 원리 속에서 작동하는 동시에 캠퍼스 내에서 존재감도 드러내는 건물을 새로 설계했다.
공동체와 협력을 목적으로 북극성 밑에 정렬된 이 새로운 <인성?리더십 개발센터>는 공군사관학교의 열망을 건축적으로 의미있게 해석한다. 우리의 가장 중요한 프로젝트 중 하나를 재해석하여 캠퍼스 중심에 21세기 건물을 기여할 수 있었던 영광스러운 기회였다.

[The Center for Character & Leadership Development (CCLD)] will serve as an education and research center, supporting the Air Force Academy’s mission to integrate character and leadership development into all aspects of the Cadet experience while also serving as a think tank for leadership and character development initiatives nationwide.
The [CCLD] also represents an important and symbolic addition to the Academy’s campus, which SOM designed in 1954, and was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2004. As the first building constructed in the Cadet Area since the 1990s, the [CCLD] creates an architectural focal point for the campus, and serves as a counterpoint to the Academy’s iconic Cadet Chapel.
“Character and leadership development is the essence of the Air Force Academy’s mission and is interwoven into every aspect of the Academy experience,” says Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson, Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy. “This iconic structure represents our bold vision to become the premier venue for the integrated study and development of character and leadership.”

What is the architectural theme of this project?
Our design for the [CCLD] creates an architectural focal point for the campus, and serves as a counterpoint to the Academy’s iconic Cadet Chapel. The 46,000ft2 building creates a distinct icon for the U.S. Air Force Academy. The [CCLD] features a dramatic 105ft skylight, a design element that establishes a bold presence on the campus.
The feature of skylight seems like the rudder of airplane from a distance. Especially, it’s symbolic and striking in this campus. Did you intend this form? If not, why do you make a feature like that?
We designed the building to create a precise optical alignment with the North Star, Polaris which symbolizes the core values of the [CCLD] and Air Force Academy more broadly. The design makes Polaris the focal point of a 105ft high skylight structure and created a powerful landmark which embodies the mission of the [CCLD]. By aligning this new center for community and collaboration under the North Star, our design creates a meaningful architectural interpretation of the Academy’s aspirations.
SOM made a whole campus plan in 1954. I guess, you have to add the new plan in the existing context. Please let me know the relation of old and new parts. Also, how do you respect the existing buildings?
In 1993, the Air Force Academy created a new program, the Center for Character and Leadership Development (CCLD). The program, it was later decided, would be housed in a new building envisioned as a reason-based counterpoint to the Academy’s iconic (faith-based) chapel. Presented with the opportunity to revisit one of its most significant projects fifty years later, we designed a new building that defers to the chapel and works within the discipline of the Academy’s planning grid, while also asserting itself within the campus. By aligning this new nexus for community and collaboration under the North Star, Polaris, the [CCLD] successfully creates a meaningful architectural interpretation of the Academy’s aspirations. We were honored to have this opportunity to revisit one of our most important projects, and to make a 21st-century contribution at the heart of the campus.
