솜자이 하우스 건축주가 은퇴한 후에 거주할 집으로 설계된 이 주택은 가족과 친구, 손님들이 머무르며 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있는 코코넛눔(Coco-NutNoom) 리조트의 접수처 역할도 한다. 건물은 부부 침실 하나와 화장실, 객실, 가족단위 요리를 위한 식료품 저장실로 구성되어 있다. 건물의 대청은 가변적인 다목적 공간으로 기능한다. 거실과 파티장, 커피숍, 심지어는 요가 구역으로도 쓸 수 있다. 상층부 데크는 주변의 코코넛 농원과 바다, 사무이 (Samui) 섬, 언덕의 파노라마 전경이 보이도록 설계되었다.
건축 형태의 선은 건물 뒤편 언덕의 스카이라인과 관계를 맺으며, 곡선 디자인을 따라 바람을 매끄럽게 흘려 보낸다. 건물의 전면은 바다의 전경이 보이도록 확 틔워 설계했으며, 캔틸레버 개념을 활용하여 건물을 뜨거운 햇빛으로부터 보호했다. 건물이 주변 코코넛 농원의 초록색 및 바다의 푸른색과 대비되어 두드러지게 보이도록 적색을 사용하였다. 벽돌과 유광 콘크리트는 냉각 속성이 있어 주택의 과열화를 막고, 지역 건설인부들도 능숙하게 다루는 재료이다. 또한 얇은 철 계단은 부두 건설노동자로서 금속작업에 숙련된 지역 인부들의 장인정신을 보여준다.

이 프로젝트에서 벽돌을 주재료로 사용한 이유는 무엇이며, 사용된 벽돌의 종류와 그 특성에 대해 설명해달라.
- 벽돌은 이 지역에서 쓸 수 있는 재료로서, 구하기가 쉽고, 단열에도 적합할 뿐더러 지역 인부들도 벽돌 작업에 숙련되어 있다.
- 지역 공장에서 만든 적벽돌을 사용했다.
벽돌을 다루는 건축물의 설계, 시공 과정의 주안점은 무엇이라고 생각하는가?
지역 벽돌은 품질과 크기가 균일하지 않다. 모든 벽돌을 다양한 용도에 맞게 잘 골라내야 한다. 양질의 정확한 크기를 갖는 벽돌은 벽을 쌓을 때 사용한다. 품질이 별로인 벽돌은 깨졌을 때 교체할 수 있는 지반과 보도에 사용한다.
벽돌과 함께 사용된 주재료는 무엇이며, 이들 재료 사이에는 어떤 상호작용이 있는가?
- 모르타르와 컬러 유광 콘크리트를 사용했다.
- 유광 콘크리트에는 줄무늬가 생겨 벽돌 벽체와 흥미로운 질감의 대비를 이룬다. 이런 기법으로 강하고 무겁고 건축적인 벽돌 형태의 느낌을 완화시켜 주변 환경에 스며들게 할 수 있다.
벽돌의 질감을 위해 어떤 특별한 작업이나 처리를 하였는가? 이 질감은 건축물에 어떤 이미지를 형성하는가?
벽돌 벽체에는 유광 콘크리트와 비슷한 색조의 아크릴 수채색을 적용했고, 유광 콘크리트에는 아크릴 수밀봉재를 도포하여 열대의 섬 지역에서 일어나기 쉬운 마모를 방지하고자 했다.
현재 주목하고 있는 재료는 어떤 것이며, 앞으로 주목 받을 재료는 무엇이라 생각하나?
우리는 개인적으로 각 대지마다 특수한 지역 재료를 물색하고 있다. 우리는 새로운 설계기법을 창조하여 지역 재료에 적용하는 법을 탐구하는 게 좋다. 생각하는 것, 이것이 우리의 미래다.

The house was mainly designed as a home after retirement for the owner and, at the same time, it also serves as a reception for Coco- NutNoom resort where family, friends and guests can stop by and have a good time.
The building consists of a main-bedroom with bathroom, a guestbedroom, a guest-bathroom and a pantry for family cooking. The main hall of the building serves as a flexible-multi-purpose space. It can be used as a living space, a party venue, coffee shop or even a yoga area. The upper deck was designed to provide panoramic view of the surrounded coconut plantation, the sea, Samui Island and the hills. The line of the architecture form is relating to the skyline of hills behind the building which allows the wind to flow smoothly with the curvy design. The front of the building was designed with open angle to receive the full view of the sea. The cantilever concept was used to protect the building from the hot sunlight.
The main color used was red to make the building stand out from the green of the coconut plantation and the blue of the sea. Brick and polished concrete were the material due the cooling property to protect the house from the heat and due to the local construction worker expertise. The thin iron staircase also shows the craftsmanship of local workmen as construction workers at the piers who are skillful in metal work.

Is there any particular reason for using Brick as main material for this project? And what types of Brick have you used in this project, and what general properties do they have?
- Brick is a local material to use, easy to looking for, appropriate for protecting heat and also local workers are skillful on brick work.
- Local red brick from local factory
About what should we be careful when designing and undertaking construction with Brick?
Quality and size of local brick is not the same. We have to screen all bricks for using in different purpose. Good quality, precise size bricks are used for wall work. Lower quality bricks are used for ground/ walk way because we can replace and fix them when their break.
What material was mainly used with Brick in this project, and how do those materials interact with each other?
- M ortar and color polished concrete
- Polished concrete texture strip makes interesting contrast with brick wall texture. With this technique, it can help to reduce strong, massive architectural brick form and blend into environment.
Have you applied any special work or treatment for the texture of Brick? What image does this texture make for the building?
We applied acrylic water color with similar color tone of polished concrete to brick wall and acrylic water seal to polished concrete in order to protect erosion from tropical/ island environment.
What material are you looking at now? And do you think what material will get much attention in the future?
We personally looking for local material in each particular site. We prefer to create and explore new design technique into local materials. We think. This is our future.
