한편 우리는 이전 세대가 함께 노력하며 거둬온 많은 성과들을 깊이 따져보지도 않고 당연시하는 경향이 있다. 이런 성과 중의 하나가 공공기반시설이다. 수도꼭지에서 나오는 물이 바로 이렇게 소홀히 취급되는 공공재 중 하나이다. 국제 기업들은 물 사용을 자체적인 경제 모델의 일부로 포함하지만, 서구 도시에서 물은 대부분 자유롭게 분배되는 공공재다. 심지어 몬트리올(Montreal)에서는 주민 대부분에게 공짜로 물을 공급한다. 이 프로젝트는 공공재에 대한 자유로운 접근을 옹호하며 공공재 개념을 재정립하고자 한 것이다.
그런 개념을 위한 장소와 형태를 찾고자 계획된 <샘물의 집>은 공공이 공유하는 도시 공간에서 존재감을 자랑하는데, 열린 1층 평면과 아치형 출입통로, 접근 가능한 옥상을 갖추는 등 다양한 공적 용도의 공간을 제공한다. 이곳은 주변을 배회하거나 내부에 들어가 뜻밖의 발견을 할 수 있는 새로운 관심의 초점을 만들고, 하나의 매듭처럼 기능하며 공간을 구조화하기도, 주변 프로그램들을 허용하기도 한다. 공간의 중앙에는 지붕의 구멍을 관통하는 가는 물줄기가 떨어지기 때문에, 그 물을 마시거나, 관찰하거나, 물소리를 듣거나, 물장난을 칠 수 있다. 물은 작은 수조에 수집되고, 수집된 물은 노즐을 통해 공기 중으로 다시 방출되어 얇은 수증기 구름을 만들어낸다. 이 구름은 건물 안에서 천천히 움직인다.
<샘물의 집>은 몬트리올 정 중앙에 있는 세인트 캐서린 앤 클락(Saint Catherine and Clark) 거리의 모퉁이에 위치한다. 도심지가 들어서길 기다리는 불확정적인 필지에 위치하는 이 건물은 주변의 절충적인 건축 환경 속에서 공간의 잠재력을 끌어올린다. 계단을 따라 건물의 옥상에 올라가면, 주변 환경을 360˚의 파노라마 전경으로 감상할 수 있다. <샘물의 집>은 사람들이 서로 소통하며 교류하는 공적 장소일 뿐만 아니라, 삶을 찬미하는 장소로도 계획되었다. 이곳은 물과 함께, 모든 근본 요소와 함께 삶이 약동한다. 건물의 외피는 단순한 은신처나 둘러 막는 구조를 넘어, 생동하고 변화한다. 식물과 균류, 작은 유기체들이 건물 안에서뿐만 아니라 바깥에서도 저마다 작은 생태서식지를 만들어낸다.

Reexamining the fountain In contemporary urban as well as cultural discussions we see a renaissance of the idea of common space, in german either translated as “Allmende” or “Gemeinschaft” depending on a relationship towards (city) space or social structures. This is related to the dipole of the private vs. the public as the two dominant categories of the 20th century. Now in the 21st century we find many ways of being together as part of daily life, be it through social media or through community gardens or similar locally rooted projects.
On the other hand we tend to take for granted many achievements inherited from previous generations’ common efforts, without giving them a second thought. One of these heritages are public infrastructures. The excellent quality of water coming from the tap is one of these neglected public goods. While international companies secure access to water as part of their economic models, in western cities this good is mostly distributed freely.
In Montreal, water is even delivered free to most residential users. The project wishes to re-address the notion of the public good by celebrating free access to it. The [Fountain House] is to be a place for this celebration to find a place and a shape. To give it a presence in public-shared city spaces. The [Fountain House], with it’s open ground plan, overlapping archways for entering and accessible rooftop offers a space for various kinds of public use. It creates a new centre of attraction, a place to be around, to be in, to discover.
This node structures the space and still allows surrounding programs. In the core, falling through a hole in the roof, a thin water fall is offered to the public, to drink, to observe or hear, to play with. The water is collected in a small basin and redistributed to the air thanks to nozzles creating a thin refreshing cloud slowly moving in the space of the [Fountain House]. The [Fountain House] is located at the corner of Sainte Catherine and Clark, in a really central area of Montreal. Built on an undefined space, an inner city waiting land, with an eclectic architectural surrounding, the fountain house enhances the potential of the space. Stairs allow the visitor to reach the roof of the structure and enjoy a 360° panorama of the surrounding environment.
Besides being a public place of interaction and interchange, the [Fountain House] is a place to celebrate life. It lives with the water, the fundamental element of all. The skin of the building is more than just a shelter or an enclosure. It lives and changes. Plants, fungi and small organisms create their own small biological habitat on the outside, as well as the inside of the fountain house.
